My name is Joy Adeyemi. I am a young professional living in the Boston area with a goal to help make a difference in the lives of many who are living with mental illness. This cause is near and dear to my heart because my oldest brother suffers from a mental illness. I experienced the shame and stigma that comes from being associated with mental illness and for many years I did not discuss my brother with anyone.
This year I made the decision that it was time to stop the facade. The only way I can help my brother is to speak out about this. I decided my way of giving back this holiday was to host a fundraiser to help raise awareness for mental health. This event is taking place in an intimate setting in Boston’s SOWA district with about 50 people attending. I did some research about the organization I wanted to support and came across Clubhouse International.
I was very impressed with their model and how they help grow and sustain a robust network of Clubhouses. Their mission is to end social and economic isolation for people with mental illness. Something I can personally relate to because of my brother. Each year almost 100,000 people living with mental illness access Clubhouse services.
I am also doing a silent auction and raffle as a part of this event. The funds raised will go towards the start-up of new clubhouses and training for clubhouse staff. I hope you will consider attending this event and help make a difference in the lives of many.
